In 1887 the town of Blackwater was founded near the recently completed Mo. Pacific RR. By the 1940's, modern transportation made it easier for residents to travel further for employment and shopping needs and more difficult for small local merchants. Trains did not stop for stock, mail and passengers anymore. The local quarry closed because of fresh water springs. By 1990, most of the downtown stores were empty and in deplorable condition. Only four businesses survived. Fortunately, several residents came together and started a movement to bring the town back to life. Organizations were formed and each worked in its own way to better the town. Grants and revenue bonds made possible a new sewer system. Old time street lamps were donated and volunteer labor helped lay new brick sidewalks. The downward spiral of the town was stemmed. As fast as the buildings could be renovated, shops moved in. Harold Jones donated for a Telephone Museum showcasing a lifetime collection of telephone memorabilia. Flower gardens sprang up all over the downtown area. A Community Theatre was established where plays written by Jay Turley are performed Hero's Park containing a Veteran's Memorial was constructed. A replica of the old calaboose containing the original locally made jail cell was built. A full size windmill was put back in the middle of Main St. where once one stood over the 'town well'. The old hotel, "The Iron Horse Hotel and Restaurant" has been renovated with ten rooms and fine dining. We hope you enjoy your visit.
