Blackwater Resident Named Snickers®

The little town of Blackwater, Missouri has the
'distinction' of being the home of a Mars Candy
Company contest winner. From 1932 through the1940's,
Minnie and Richard, (or "Doc" or "Jiggs", as he was
sometimes called) Morgan owned and operated a drug
store at 127 Main Street which had living quarters
in the back. When the Mars Candy Co. had a contest to
name their new candy bar. Minnie sent in the
name "Knickers", the company changed it to Snickers
and the rest is history.
For her efforts, Minnie won a little Austin car. She kept it parked in the street in front of her store. Although the Morgans are gone now, several men in the area still remember the car. The car had a narrow wheel base, 2 people could sit in it if "they weren't too wide in the hips". Whenever Minnie got in a hurry going around a Blackwater corner, it would tip over! Minnie would have to round up a couple of gents to set it up on its wheels and she'd take off again. Eventually she sold it and bought a Model 'A' Ford. In trying to verify the exact date, Mars Co. was contacted. They would neither confirm nor deny it but said they didn't keep track of the many winners of their candy bar naming contests. That Morgans had a tiny part in this atypical success endeavor on the part of the Mars family, is quite interesting and the building at 127 Main will probably always be known as "Morgan's Drug Store".
